CASE STUDY: Waste management with RFID - Município de Oliveira do Hospital
Scope:
Oliveira do Hospital city, contrary to what happens in other cities, is the responsible to urban waste collection. Concerned about giving to the resident a better service, the municipal responsible contacted LogicPulse, that was already developing a solution that controls the urban waste collection, in order to evaluate the possibility to optimize and make more clearly the whole process of waste collection. Following this contact, LogicPulse proposed waste.track solution, which was applied in one of the waste collection circuits, on order to demonstrate the advantages of this system. The challenge was accepted and the benefits demonstrated, and so the municipal responsible want to extend the solution to the other circuits.

The solution:
The solution is an integrated system that includes the hardware RFID (fixed readers, antennas and tags), the hardware support, the mobile terminals (Pocket PCs) and the software application.
Main functionalities of the developed system:
- Containers identification by using a RFID tag;
- Containers, vehicles and waste collection teams management;
- Planning the route and location of collection containers for each car;
- Monitoring the performance of the defined routes. So, it ensures: automatic registration of the collection of containers (location and time of collection), the conclusion of the route set and the control of the total time consumed in collection;
- Getting reports that includes information about the time spent in each route, the percentage of completion of the route, etc;
- Automatic retrieval of time averages of the various services in order to improve performances;
- Real time consultation of the circuits of each collection vehicles;
- Data transmission in real time, through GSM / GPRS to the central application;
- Association of the position of each collected container, with their GPS coordinates;
- Through the GPS module, it provides to the driver of the collection vehicle, the information about their location, and about the location of the containers that are in the route he is running;
- It works with containers with different models and different materials;

waste.track application: collection route
Results:
The use of the urban waste collection system can increase the efficiency of each collection team, plan more efficiently the collection routes, leading to the elimination of repetition of routes or of the default of them, to ensure compliance with the routes and dumping of each container and allows monitoring, in real time, all vehicles. As a result of using this system we have the reduction of the collection costs and the elimination of the residents’ complaints.
