CASE STUDY: Library Management with RFID - Município de Seia
Scope:
Seia city has a municipal library and another in Centro de Interpretação da Serra da Estrela. The city acquired software to make the cataloging of library collections of both institutions, and after that they face the need to find a solution for two kinds of problems: the first deals with security issues, or prevent the exit of unauthorized material of the libraries. The second is related to the processes of check-in, check-out and inventory of library collections. In order to find solution to these problems, they contacted several entities, including LogicPulse that, in the opinion of the council, make the most efficient and robust solution. The solution uses RFID technology to solve the two problems presented in a transparent and integrated way.
The solution:
The solution is an integrated system that includes hardware (RFID fixed readers, portable readers and RFID tags), hardware support and application software.
Main functionalities of the developed system:
- Allows unique identification of each library collections using a UHF RFID tag;
- Allows the users registration and identification using an RFID card;
- Allows an inventory of collections quickly and easily by simply moving the portable RFID reader near to the items to inventory. This inventory can be total or partial (in sections, by room, by floor, etc.).
- Enables the implementation of entrances and exits control through integrated RFID readers that if leave any non-authorized article leaves it activate an alarm;
- Allows to check in and check out the articles through the automatic reading of RFID tags which makes the process nearly instantaneous;
- Allows the kiosks integration for self check-in and check-out in thesystem;
- Allows the use of multiple software management libraries, because it uses the communication protocol SIP2.

Aplication for libraries control
Results:
The use of a system for bibliographic collections control has advantages in different fields, since it ends up being a system to cross the entire control and management of libraries. The whole process of identifying users, check-in and check-out is done very quickly and easily, enabling to better respond to all users’ requests. The control of outputs is done automatically in a little intrusive way, since the equipment control are discrete and the installation is easy. The inventory can be done in a few hours and not in several days, as before. All these advantages allow the library staff to provide a higher quality and getting closer to its users. This is extremely important considering the nature of institutions of public utility that the libraries have, as a distributors of knowledge and culture.
